Dear Fellow eBay Seller, If
you have been selling on eBay for any length of time, you know the one constant
is change. Various small tweaks to the selling platform, annual fee changes and
other small policy changes that affect you as a seller happened at frequent but
reasonable intervals. But for years, the visitor experience hasn't really changed. In 2008, that reasonably cautious policy towards change has been thrown out the window. Changes on eBay for both sellers and visitors have been dramatic. Just how dramatic? In April 0f 2008 Stephanie Tilenius said "So many changes are headed eBay's way that by this time next year eBay.com will be unrecognizable in comparison to today." As sellers, we just have to suck it in and adopt to the latest round of change - if we can understand them (or leave eBay and kill our income stream completely.) But as visitors - folks who have many choices on where to spend their money - the changes are shockingly dramatic and confusing. What was once a simple buyer's marketplace has become complex and cumbersome with great changes to the look, feel and operation of eBay hitting visitors all at once. And true to form, eBay hasn't taken adequate steps to educate visitors about the changes... And lets be honest. Even if they did adequately educate the visitors, what visitor wants to keep relearning how to effectively shop on eBay? They have better things to do with their time and friendlier places to spend their money. Now some visitors will stick it out and figure things out and keep buying but it has an impact. And new visitors will keep coming. But lets be realistic... a confused mind generally chooses to not take any action... and that means less sales for long term eBay sellers. I've been selling on eBay since 1997 and have experienced and adjusted to just about every change they have ever implemented. And I have to tell you the changes in 2008 have been the most I've ever experienced in eBay. And the most dramatic too. I still don't understand all the ins and outs enough to fully reengineer my eBay strategies for maximum effectiveness... whatever that means in this new, rapidly evolving eBay. In addition to the typical fee increase, eBay has
As if this wasn't enough... Stephanie Tilenius, General Manager of eBay North America, delivered the keynote address at ChannelAdvisor's Catalyst Conference on April 2, 2008. In her address, she promised even bolder and faster changes at eBay, stating that eBay's goal is to deliver a more retail-like experience. She also stated that the concept of an annual seller fee change no longer existed at eBay and that further pricing adjustments could come at any time. She also said that so many changes are headed eBay's way that by this time next year eBay.com will be unrecognizable in comparison to today. Whatever all that means... To me, it means that I need to be ready to dig in my heels and constantly do lots of learning and experimentation to stay competitive. (And you'd better be ready to do the same if you want to be as effective as possible in making your sales on eBay.) Or you can invest your time in growing your business in another way. All these unpredictable changes affect your income. Stability and predictability in your business is lost. This is why building a second income stream for your business is so critical. All the constant tweaks and small erosions of my eBay business made me start seeking other ways to sell my goods in early 2007. I built a website to showcase my products but that put the entire challenge of getting visitors on me. Not an easy task. Add to that the new challenges of dealing with collecting payments directly, merchant accounts, dealing with a shopping cart and the security of the website and all the other issues that exist when running your own ecommerce site no matter how big or small. And then one day in early 2007, I discovered one of my competitors selling his items on Amazon. A huge light bulb went off... A new sales channel like eBay that I could exploit was suddenly revealed to me. Now I knew years ago that anyone could sell their used books on Amazon. Heck, I sold some used books from my personal collection on Amazon in 2005. It just didn't dawn on my at that time to sell my catalog of products on Amazon as well as eBay at that time. Looking back on that, I could kick myself for not making that connection. That missed connection cost me tens of thousands of dollars in sales. It took me a while from when the light bulb went off until I started adding my catalog of products to Amazon. In fact, it wasn't until the summer of 2007 that I actually added my first product. Since then, I've added about 90% of my catalog to Amazon and boy has it been good. Has it been successful? Since June of 2007 to October 2008, I've sold 6,947 items on Amazon. Compare that to just 4,153 items on eBay in that same period of time. And the best part is that Amazon, once I learned the ropes, is so much easier to use and doesn't keep changing on me. The same process and fees I experienced selling a few books in 2005 is the same process and fees I am experiencing today. In fact, the only changes I could identify in all this time are a few tweaks to their seller's panel (called Sellers Central) to make it easier for sellers to review their account details. When was the last time eBay did something that made it easier for sellers? Selling on Amazon is easy. In fact, it is easier to sell on Amazon than on eBay. But that doesn't mean that it is drop dead simple. There are many procedures and techniques to adopt to make your selling experience first rate. To make this transition as easy as possible, I've gathered everything I've learned about selling on Amazon and packaged in into a huge, fully detailed 97 page manual. IntroducingThe
